The Shawshank Redemption (Warner Bros., 1994)

Nominated for seven Oscars, one of the most compelling movies of all time was The Shawshank Redemption starring Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman & Bob Gunton. The main character Andy Dufrense (Robbins) is sentenced to life for a murder he claims he did not commit.

While in prison Andy meets Red (Freeman) and many other inmates whose lives are forever changed by their interactions with Andy. However it’s not all beaches and sun for Andy as he must deal with a corrupt, abusive Warden (Gunton) and figure out what the rest of his life is going to look like.

In the words of Mr. Dufrense, “Get busy living, or get busy dying.”

Find out if Andy makes it out– dead or alive.

I Am Legend (Warner Bros., 2007)

I Am Legend is a science-fiction horror film that pits the main character Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) against deadly monsters, a ticking clock and worst of all, he’s all alone. He is willing to fight to the death to find a cure to the virus that has taken his family, his life and transformed mankind into monsters.

This remake will keep you at the edge of your seat and have you rooting for Smith as he searches desperately for a cure or any other survivor.

Godzilla 3

The King of Monsters is back in this explosive reboot of the franchise starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Bryan Cranston (TV’s Breaking Bad), Oscar winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (Inception). It is the first truly joyous popcorn action movie of the season with wonderful visuals and terrific beasts.

Draft Day (Lionsgate, 2014)

draft day cover

draft day cover“The bigger the gamble, the bigger the reward.” In professional football, some of the largest gambles are waged not on the field, but by the general managers on draft day.

Sonny Weaver (Kevin Costner) is the general manager of the Cleveland Browns, looking to make a splash on draft day and bring his team a long-awaited championship. He makes a blockbuster trade, giving up his draft picks for the next three years for the number-one pick and the chance to draft the top-rated player. This is his moment. If he slips, it will cost him his career. Just like the real NFL draft, there are many turns and surprises.

Costner is amazing at portraying a man struggling with the recent death of his father and his wife’s pending pregnancy, while managing the needs of his players and balancing pressure from the team’s owner and fans. He stars alongside a strong cast including Jennifer Garner, Dennis Leary, Terry Crews, Sean Combs, Chadwick Boseman and NFL pro running back Arian Foster.

Draft Day was made in partnership with the NFL, giving the movie an authentic, high-tension feel. Those tied to the football league had a very positive reaction to the film. “Draft Day clearly captures the behind-the-scenes excitement of what really happens,” said Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George. “It’s an incredible, feel-good movie.”

While the parents remain at odds, Jim’s clan of tomboy daughters and Lauren’s brood of boys soon benefit from the forced situation.

Jim and Lauren soon start seeing the better in each other, and enjoying their time together. Perfect Pairs

Wedding Singer, The key art_71a05ae7

Perfect Pairs, on-screen couples that we love together, are the focus of this week’s Collector’s Promotion. This collection was inspired by the upcoming release of Blended, starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. When they co-starred together 16 years ago in The Wedding Singer, the result was a sweet, funny and endearing combination.

Wedding Singer, The key art_71a05ae7

The most legendary couple in this collection is Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn who co-starred in a total of nine films together. Hepburn launched a new breed of strong female characters in films like Adam’s Rib and Woman of the Year, where a professional rivalry with her husband sets off a battle of the sexes. Off screen, the couple shared a twenty-six year relationship until Tracy’s death.

In the ’90s, the trifecta of Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan and Nora Ephron became synonymous with the rom-com genre. Co-starring a total of three times to date, Hanks and Ryan always exude an authentic chemistry when paired together, like in the quirky Joe versus the Volcano, and later in the blockbuster hit You’ve Got Mail. Also included in this collection is The Shop Around the Corner, the original film that You’ve Got Mail was based on, which has earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke first teamed up in the ’90s with the critically acclaimed Before Sunrise. Almost ten years later, they got together with Richard Linklater to write and create a sequel. As Hawke puts it, “It’s not like anybody was begging us to make a second film. We obviously did it because we wanted to.” Before Sunset is a rare example of a sequel that doesn’t fall flat and was very well-received by critics and audiences alike.

Movies Based on Young Adult Novels

7-29-2014 2-48-27 PM

7-29-2014 2-48-27 PM

Our current Collector’s Promotion is “Movies Based on Young Adult Novels,” inspired by last week’s release of Divergent. Here’s a look at 3 titles in the collection that we recommend.

Warm Bodies (Lionsgate, 2013) based on the novel by Isaac Marion

As evidenced by the raging success of the Twilight franchise, humans and creatures of the night, even members of a wolf pack can make for a pretty hot romance. But zombies?

Warm Bodies is a tongue-in-cheek take on the classic Romeo and Juliet storyline, uniquely told through the perspective of our hero, R, a teenage zombie. After saving Julie, a human, from a pack of zombies, R begins to feel an attraction to her. While his feelings seem unlikely, given his being a zombie and all, Julie soon sees that the zombies are slowly starting to regain their human characteristics.

While the premise is just as crazy as it sounds, this movie never takes itself too seriously, which is ultimately what gives it a heartbeat.

The Outsiders (Warner Bros., 1983) based on the novel by S.E. Hinton

Set in the mid-60s, The Outsiders follows the story of a gang of kids from the wrong side of the tracks that get mixed up in a turf war. The original novel was written by Hinton in her teens, which gives the ever-familiar storyline a tender edge.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this film marked the beginning of the careers of C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, and Diane Lane.

Our collection contains both the original version of the film, as well as the 2005 “Complete Novel” re-release. The newer version contains 22 minutes of previously deleted footage to make it more faithful to the original book, as well as a new soundtrack.

Flipped (Warner Bros., 2010) based on the novel by Wendelin Van Draanen

Our final recommendation comes from film historian Leonard Maltin. Watch this video he made just for Kaleidescape about Flipped.

Check out these and other titles, on sale now for just $4.95 Blu-ray quality / $2.95 DVD quality.

The Art and Soul of Home Theater

Theo Kalomirakis, a legend in home theater design, unveiled his private theater, Roxy 2.0, last night. Kaleidescape sponsored this project alongside Digital Projection, Stewart Filmscreen, California Audio Technologies, SH Acoustics, Crestron and Prima Cinema. His dedication to preserving the quality of a true theatrical experience is exactly what Kaleidescape is all about.

Every film director has a vision. This vision is realized in the way a movie is shot, the way it is lit, the soundtrack, the visual effects, and of course, the actors’ performances. The grand design is to create a mood that deeply immerses the audience in a well-told story. But as viewers turn to streaming devices and all-you-can-watch movie services, they sacrifice quality for convenience. In fact, they are falling into the same trap as music fans who accepted the compromised quality of lossy audio for the convenience of MP3s. Subsequently, an entire generation of consumers has no idea what music is supposed to sound like.

As movie lovers are drawn to the convenience of movies streamed to their devices over the Internet, they end up trading in the “vision”—the full-blown cinematic experience that comes from lossless and full HD-quality audio and video. And while there’s no disputing the convenience of movies streamed to your smartphone or tablet, nothing beats the high-quality, all-encompassing immersion of home theaters.

Nobody understands this better than Theo Kalomirakis, “the Father of Home Theater.” His personal theater provides the perfect platform to showcase how far home theater technologies have come in delivering an immersive movie-watching experience. And now that the technology allows home theaters to be more affordable than ever, millions of customers already appreciate movies to their fullest at home.

What most people don’t realize is that they can easily have a movie-watching experience in their homes that matches—or surpasses—the experience of a state-of-the art commercial theater.

Home theater products today include powerful source devices, fantastic sound systems, and superb screens and displays/projectors. To bring it all together, intelligent controls make it easy for viewers to experience each feature with the touch of a button. They can select the ideal film, perfect the sound, and fine-tune the picture—all while relaxed in their favorite chair.

For 13 years, Kaleidescape has been the gold standard as the most powerful movie server for home theaters. It provides a single source for instant access to all of your movies—whether on DVD, Blu-ray disc, or as a digital download from the Kaleidescape Store—all conveniently organized in one library. Movies played on Kaleidescape are delivered in full Blu-ray quality; there’s no added compression, no video noise, no buffering, and no pixelation. Whether you’re browsing our store or your own library, our smart, responsive search makes it easy to find and play the movies that matter to you and your family.

With Kaleidescape, you never have to choose between convenience and quality. Finally, you can experience movies at home as they were meant to be.

Our Best Documentaries

This week we are proud to present a Collector’s Promotion on Our Best Documentaries. Here are three highlighted titles from this collection of extraordinary true stories.

Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?

Teri Horton, a retired truck driver from California, bought a painting for $5.00 from a thrift shop because she thought it was bright and cheery and would make a good gift. When it proved to be too big, she set it out to sell at a garage sale. A local art teacher spotted it and suggested it might possibly be painted by Jackson Pollock. The film follows Horton as she learns who the #$&% Jackson Pollock is and attempts to authenticate the painting. It offers an insightful look into the elitist, high-stakes world of art dealership as an average woman tries to take it on.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

King of Kong

Billy Mitchell is the cocky, reigning champion in earning the highest recorded Donkey Kong score. Steve Wiebe is an unassuming opponent who submits a score that shatters Mitchell’s. What ensues is a story of scrutiny and clandestine revenge fueled by a deep-seated rivalry. The juxtaposition of something as low-stakes and unimportant as a video game score matched with such unwavering passion makes for an oddly entertaining and eye-opening story.

Paris Is Burning

The New York City ball culture of the LGBT communities is front and center in this colorful look at the underground competition runway. Participants walk to win prizes at events known as Balls, competing categories ranging from dance skills, costumes and attitude, to “realness.” The fierceness of the competition transcends the class, gender and race of its participants. In 1995, responding to widespread criticism that it has ignored documentary films like Paris Is Burning, The Thin Blue Line and Roger and Me, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has changed the procedures under which feature-length documentary films are nominated for Academy Awards.
