The “Cast of the Expendables” Collection

They eat bad guys for breakfast, take out evil tyrants like they’re taking out the trash, and restore law and order before bedtime. Yes, while most of the cast of The Expendables trilogy have reached retirement age, they continue to fill the world with explosions, dubious puns, and serious scorch-marked attitude.

In The Expendables 3, Sylvester Stallone leads his all-star team against an enemy thought long dead. Action elders Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford appear for the first time, adding their muscle to the biggest, baddest, least abandoned-building-friendly entry in the franchise. While the action is decidedly old-school, Sly employs true new blood with debuts from Ronda Rousey and Kellan Lutz.

To highlight the release of The Expendables 3, we’ve gathered some of the best these action heroes have to offer in our “Cast of the Expendables” Collection.

To see Sly throwing some slightly faster punches in his younger days, Rambo: First Blood is essential viewing. Driven by a smarter and more subtle script than it’s often given credit for, this film has influenced action movies in the decades since its release. Also included in the collection are the Rambo sequels in which our man travels to Afghanistan and Burma and racks up Guinness World Records for vengeance with violence.

Although no new stars have truly inherited the action thriller throne from Stallone and Schwarzenegger, The Expendables regular Jason Statham comes close. While his martial arts-influenced moves in War and Homefront are all action, Statham has acting chops, too. Included in this collection is Killer Elite, in which he goes toe-to-toe with Robert De Niro.

Dynamic Duos

untitledThis week our collection “Dynamic Duos” is on sale, paired with the release of 22 Jump Street.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum team up again as officers Schmidt and Jenko, this time faking their way through college to find the supplier of a new, dangerous drug.

Onscreen pairings that work really well stay in our minds and it’s almost impossible to imagine someone else in the role. We’ve dug deep into the trivia vaults to share some could-have-been dynamic duo castings.

Agents K & J

dynamic duos_4

Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith star as the scum-fighting super-agents, regulators of all things alien on planet earth in the Men in Black franchise.

…but it could have been Clint Eastwood and Chris O’Donnell. Dirty Harry and Robin—it could have been a great combo!

 Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson

dynamic duos_3

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law used their wits, good looks and a little bit of fisticuffs to get to the bottom of the mysteries in the Sherlock Holmes films.

…but it could have been Jason Statham and Colin Farrell. A handsome pair, indeed.

 Lee & Carter

dynamic duos_2

Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are unforgettable as the mismatched motor-mouthed maverick and daredevil cop in the Rush Hour movies.

…but it could have been Chris Farley and Martin Lawrence. To be fair, Chris Farley DID star in Beverly Hills Ninja, so the stunts probably would have still been pretty good.

 Detectives Lowrey & Burnet

dynamic duos_1

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence seem pretty spot-on as two loose cannons out to make an epic drug bust in Bad Boys.

…but it could have been Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz. The original pitch was written specifically for the pair based off their successful sketches on SNL.

What do you think? Did they get the pairs right? Download movies from our Dynamic Duos Collection and decide for yourself!

Philip Seymour Hoffman: A Most Wanted Man

The film is set in post-911 Hamburg where German and American intelligence officers are working to keep further terrorist activities in check. Günther Bachmann (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a German operative who has set his interests on a Chechen refugee who mysteriously turns up in town, laying stake to a large inheritance. When the man contacts an idealistic human rights lawyer (Rachel McAdams), he also piques the interest of an American CIA agent (Robin Wright).

Who is this most wanted mad? An innocent, or a pawn in a larger conspiracy? Agencies on all sides want to pounce, but Günther wants to hold out for the long game, convinced that if he’s patient he can uncover something bigger.

Sadly, A Most Wanted Man would be Hoffman’s last contribution to the world of film.  The Denver post writes, “With his sharp instincts and exhausted wisdom, the character of Günther offers us a bittersweet reminder of Hoffman’s gifts in what is his last completed film.”

"The Ides Of March" New York Premiere - Inside ArrivalsAfter a string of small performances, Hoffman became a recognizable face in the late ’90s when he appeared in the film Twister. He left an impression as the scruffy, smart-mouthed, storm-chasing sidekick. A few years later he followed up with Boogie Nights, as the childlike and lovesick Scotty. His standout performance in this star-studded ensemble solidified him on the screen as a talent on the rise.

After earning his stripes with supporting roles in films such as Flawless, Magnolia and Almost Famous, he parlayed into leading roles in several award-winning films. In Capote, he captured audiences with a nuanced performance as the eccentric author, earning him an Academy Award for “Best Actor.” In Doubt, his stirring portrayal of a charismatic priest accused of inappropriate behavior earned him “Best Actor” nominations by the Academy, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild. Younger generations also got to appreciate his unique talent when he joined the cast of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman left behind a phenomenal collection of movies. Neither branded a leading man nor a character actor, his breed of performance was in a category of its own. His acting came from a raw place of emotion. Whether his characters made you laugh or made you cringe, they always left you with the urge to applaud.

5 Tips to Make Family Movie Night a Success

Today’s guest post is from our partners at Common Sense Media.

We say this a lot, but we think it’s worth repeating: It’s important to get involved in your kids’ media lives–and your kids will love it too (within reason!). But helping them become critical media consumers can be easier said than done. What’s a sure-fire way to stay involved with your kids’ media picks and create an opportunity to discuss them? Host a family movie night!

Some tips for making it work:

Schedule it. Make it a regular date and time and don’t break it. Turn off cell phones and ban multitasking during the show.

kids duartion

Kaleidescape tip: Sort the movies by duration if you have a limited amount of time to enjoy your movie.

Take turns choosing the movie. If you’ve got little kids, pre-select a group to choose from (to avoid watching Care Bears IV over and over again). If you’ve got teens, tell them you’ll watch anything they choose as long as they return the favor when it’s your turn. Enforce a “no complaining” rule.

kid with ipad_small

Location, location, location. Hang a sheet in the backyard, rent a projector, and sit on beach chairs to celebrate a classic like The Wizard of Oz. Or take family movie night on the road during vacations or at the grandparents’ house (Singin’ in the Rain, perhaps?).

Make it a theme night. This can be simple or elaborate. Eat popsicles with March of the Penguins or make food art with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. Dress in costume for A Princess Bride, or learn a few magic tricks before Harry Potter.

Kaleidescape tip: With our “scripts” feature you can queue up a custom-themed evening by creating a show complete with hand-picked trailers, scenes and songs.

Talk about it. When credits roll or the next day, make time to chat about what you watched. Kids might be interested in learning more about animation or Hollywood history. Visit the library to follow up on interests piqued by the movie. Talking with kids about how movie characters handled fictional situations can be a subtle way to reinforce your family’s values or get kids to open up about their lives.

Fall TV Spotlight: Hannibal (Season 2)

Hannibal - Season 2

Our current Collector’s Promotion is a can’t miss. We have chosen some of the best new television series and dropped the prices to just $9.99 for an epic Fall TV Sale—that’s more than a $30 savings on some series!

Today we’re highlighting the Hannibal series, featured in this collection. Season 2 of the show earned an impressive 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Hannibal - Season 2

The story focuses on Dr. Hannibal Lecter in his late days as a psychiatrist. He becomes involved with the FBI when they ask for his assistance profiling a serial killer. Unbeknownst to the FBI or criminal profiler Will Graham, Lecter himself is the killer.

quote 2

Like the books and films preceding the series, Dr. Lecter is presented as a complex and sophisticated man. His home is bold and tidy, and his clothing is impeccably tailored. Both his sophistication and attention to detail translate into his killings. Each kill is presented as a work of art, a tableau of emotional expression. Later, Dr. Lecter draws out the pleasure by savoring pieces of his victims with unsuspecting dinner guests, intricately disguised in the delicate dishes he prepares.

quote 1

The character of Dr. Lecter is all about contrast, juxtaposing something evil and stomach-churning with beauty and art. Executive Producer Bryan Fuller has done a masterful job pulling off this combination. Filmed with breathtaking cinematography, the series visually surpasses network television standards.

Download Hannibal (Season 2) today for the limited-time price of $9.99. Check out the complete collection on the Kaleidescape Store.

“What I am about to tell you sounds crazy. But you have to listen to me…”

This sci-fi thriller, originally known as Edge of Tomorrow, stars Oscar nominee Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Their onscreen chemistry is fun to watch and the degree of detail in the set and costumes they wear is fantastic.

Through a bloody process of trial and error, Cage must let nothing stop him in his quest to save his peoplenot even his own death. In a cruel twist of fate, he discovers that even after death he is forced to live again, die and repeat the process.  He finds a fellow soldier (Blunt) who understands this forsaken ability and strives to find a way to use it to their advantage.

The movie was directed with great style by Doug Liman, who is best known for directing The Bourne Identity.
